A mysterious fire set fire to a New York bar owned by two expats NI was formerly called the "best bar in the world".

The fire broke out in the Grocer Dead Rabbit Grog's badtail bar in the New York financial district early Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The bar – established in 2013 by Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry from the Ardoyne area in Belfast – was voted Best World Pub in 2015.

The two friends had worked together at Merchant Hotel Belfast before being chased to open their own home in New York. The pub was named after an American Irish criminal street gang that operated in Manhattan in the 1850s, indulging in wild street battles with its rivals.

Yesterday, severe images showed the building as a charred and blackened hull. through its four floors.

In a message to customers posted on Facebook, the management of Dead Rabbit said: "This morning, a fire was reported on our block."

"We are still receiving details, but The Dead Rabbit has received considerable damage from fire and water and will be shut down until further notice.

" Fortunately, no one n? was hurt, thank you for your support and understanding in this very difficult time. "
