A huge earthquake has struck in the South Pacific, the United States Geological Survey said.

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit east of a provincial capital in the Solomon Islands on Friday.

There was no immediate tsunami threat or reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit at a depth of 33 km (21 miles) about 161 km (100 miles) east of Kira Kira, a provincial capital in the South Pacific nation.
