DPS: One soldier killed, others injured while shooting at I-10 at Avondale

AVONDALE, AZ – A soldier from the Arizona Department of Public Safety was killed and another wounded during a shootout in the West Valley on Wednesday night.

Colonel Frank Milstead announced the news at a press conference early Thursday morning at the Abrazo West Campus Hospital in Goodyear.

Milstead declared around 22 hours. Wednesday dispatchers received several calls from a vehicle behaving erratically on Interstate 10 towards the east near Avondale Boulevard.

Objects allegedly thrown from the vehicle onto other cars.

Milstead said the citizens managed to get the suspect out of the way.

When the DPS soldiers arrived at the scene, they fought with the suspect for a few minutes

During the fight, Milstead said that the suspect had taken control of a gun and fired at the minus two shots of the weapon. 19659002] One of the blows hit a soldier in the shoulder, wounding him.

Another shot hit a second soldier, killing him.

DPS stated that a third soldier had been injured during a fight with the suspect.

"I am incredibly proud of the men and women who come every day to do this job, they have the courage to go out and deal with the unknown," said Colonel Milstead Thursday morning.

Milstead spoke of the killed soldier, identified as Tyler Rider Edenhofer, saying that he was graduated from the DPS Academy in May and that he was an officer in training.

The second soldier who was injured in the shoulder was identified as Trooper Dalin Dorris. The soldier injured in the altercation with the suspect is the soldier Sean Rodecap

"The DPS family is in mourning … and (we are all) a little in a state of shock this morning," said Milstead .

DPS representatives claim that Interstate 10 Eastbound will remain closed between Litchfield Road and Avondale Boulevard at least during the morning commute

This incident marks the 55th shootings involving law enforcement in the valley in 2018.
