Anna Stevens and Kathryn Coulson, 21, were trekking on Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok when the deadly earthquake struck on Sunday.
At least 16 people died when the magnitude quake hit the popular tourist island, flattened houses and set off aftershocks hundreds of miles away on the islands of Bali and Java.
Kathryn's aunt, Victoria Toas, said the pair and hundreds of other tourists were stuck on the mountain until Monday.
Their families had a long, agonizing wait to hear if the two – from Darlington, Durham County, were safe.

Victoria told The Northern Echo: "They really believed that the volcano was erupting until they spoke to us and we told them that it was an earthquake. "
She continued, "They were absolutely terrified, there were aftershocks."

Kathryn shared an Instagram picture of their group when they reached the base of the volcano.
