RIDOT Schedules Truck Rights Hearing for Friday Night

Leader of Rhode Island Trucking Association Files Federal Complaint – and Not to Participate in Friday night road toll hearings at three locations across Rhode Island – calling it "not a fair and valid process".

"We will not be attending hearings tonight – they have diluted the process – this is not a good way to proceed," said Chris Maxwell, President and CEO of Rhode Island Truckers Association. "We will submit our comments nationally and locally in writing – we do not think this is a fair and meaningful process."

Friday evening hearing

RIDOT scheduled hearings for 18 hours. Friday to allow public comment on the environmental badessment of several truck toll locations throughout the state. The hearings will be held at Toll Gate High School, Mount Pleasant High School and Central Falls High School.

Charles St. Martin, spokesman for RIDOT, said that Friday night was chosen because it's a practical evening for residents.

"Most people are out of work at night and do not need to get up early to work the next day," St. Martin told GoLocalProv. "We thought it would be the most practical."

St. Martin added that Friday was the first available day after a mandatory 15-day waiting period required after federal permission is granted to hold public hearings. He stated that the hearing sites had been chosen by the department to maximize the ease of access throughout the state to the public.

In the past, said St. Martin, the turnout was reasonable at other Friday night meetings and RIDOT expects the same thing in this case.

Republican candidate for governorship Patricia Morgan criticized the decision of Governor Raimondo

"This reinforces the fact that there is no desire in the administration to be open and transparent, "said Morgan. "It's the same problem I've been fighting for four years … I'm disgusted by this administration."

A release from RIDOT reminded the public that an additional hearing was scheduled on Tuesday 21 August at 6 pm

The written comment may also be submitted until August 22.

This happens the same day that RITA filed an official complaint with the Elections Council, stating that WPRO's weekly "Ask the DOT" segment violates the campaign's contribution rules.
