Gunman Kills 2, Wounds 5 Others at Florida Yoga Studio: NPR

A 40-year-old man opened fire on Friday evening in the Hot Yoga Tallahbadee studio, shooting six people in total, two fatally, and pistol-badped a seventh person before killing himself, Tallahbadee police said.

Police identified the victims as Nancy Van Vessem, 61, and Maura Binkley, 21.

Two other victims are admitted to the hospital, said police.

Authorities identified the shooter as Scott Paul Beierle.

"At this time," said Tallahbadee Chief Constable Michael DeLeo Friday evening at a news conference.

Tallahbadee police said they were called to the studio just after 5:30 pm, finding Beierle deceased. Witnesses in their investigation, DeLeo said.

"This has been a tremendous team effort [with] A lot of different agencies, we are very proud to have a very good relationship with you, really critical, and really some scary times, "he said.

Both of the victims who were killed, Van Vessem and Binkley, had ties to Florida State University.

Van Vessem was a faculty member of FSU's medical school and Binkley was a student at the university, Tallahbadee station reported WCTV.

President FSU John Thrasher said in a statement to the station:

"Maura Binkley and Dr. Nancy Van Vessem: The impact of emotional change in the face of death and loss of life. the Florida State University family.

"We feel this loss profoundly and we are deeply sympathetic to Maura's and Nancy's loved ones while we pray for the recovery of those who were injured."

Van Vessem was also an internist and worked for Tallahbadee's Capital Health Plan as the chief medical director, the Tallahbadee Democrat reported. Capital Health Plan said she was a "guiding, visionary force in our daily work."

"Her dedication, caring, leadership, humanity, and experience is one of the most respected, inspiring, and accomplished medical professionals in the state," the organization said in a statement to the Democrat. "Our hearts are filled with sorrow and prayers we have been so blessed to have Nancy in our lives."

Tallahbadee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a Democrat campaigning for governor of Florida against Republican train congressman Ron DeSantis, said in a tweet Friday evening that he would be stepping away from his campaign to return to Tallahbadee.

DeLeo said investigators are still working on establishing a motive for shooting.
