DETROIT, MI – A famous piece of Detroit's history was seriously damaged, just as restoration efforts were underway.
The historic S.S. Ste Claire, also known as one of Boblo Island's boats, caught fire this morning. Firefighters tell MLive that someone was on board when the fire started, but this person did it safely. It was believed that they were working on the boat.
It is too early to know how much the damage is, but the boat was engulfed by the flames. Firefighters struggled to put out the fire because most of the boat was out of range of the wharf. Eventually, the fireboat could help put out the fire.

Ste Claire is moored at Riverside Marina in Detroit where it was being restored in recent years. The Boblo Island amusement park opened in 1898 and closed 25 years ago in 1993.
