NEW YORK – An American organization that makes Purple Heart lost medals and other military decorations presents a Purple Heart to the family of an Irish soldier killed in France while he was fighting for it. America during the First World War.
Zachariah Fike, founder of Purple Hearts Reunited, based in Vermont, said the medal would be awarded to relatives of Pvt. Michael Walsh at a ceremony Friday at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, Ireland.
Walsh was born in Mayo County in 1888. He emigrated to America in 1911 and worked as a cargo handler in Manhattan. Walsh served in the 29th Army Division when he was killed in action on October 24, 1918.
Walsh was eligible for a posthumous purple heart and other medals. Fike helped organize the medal ceremony for the Walsh family in Ireland.
