LOS ANGELES – Six weeks after winning a landslide victory among California's primary voters, Senator Dianne Feinstein suffered an embarrbading setback Saturday night when the Democratic Party officially approved its rival for the November elections.
Senate leader of the state of California, got the support of the party leadership despite Ms. Feinstein's efforts to convince the party not to give its approval.
Voting for de Leon reflects the rise of young Liberal activists in California Democratic leadership, some of whom see Ms. Feinstein as moderate compared to the intensely progressive voices that rise in the ranks of the party. These activists tend to be younger and more left-wing than the state party as a whole.
of León, 51, remains a long-standing candidate in his double-sided race against Ms. Feinstein, 85, in November; the two Democrats face each other, with no Republican in the mix, having triumphed in the so-called "first two" primary opened last month. Yet the vote for Mr. de Leon was a reminder of Ms. Feinstein's lukewarm support among Liberal Democrats as the party discusses how to take President Trump to the mid-term elections in the fall.
In a tweet after the approval, Mr. de León wrote: "Winning the approval of so many leaders and party activists @CA_Dem is not just an honor and a privilege Today 's vote is a discreet rejection of politics as usual in Washington, DC "
M. Leon's victory was the last of several triumphs for the Liberals in the Democratic primary elections this year. In particular, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an organizer of the New York community overthrew 19-year-old Democratic Party leader Joseph Crowley, in a bid to re-appoint last month. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is the largest of several members of the Democratic Socialists of America who have won the primaries for state and local offices this year.
Two other progressives, Colorado's Jared Polis and Ben Jealous of Maryland, also beat challengers last month for the Democratic nomination for the governor in these states
. Feinstein easily defeated León in the Senegalese Senate last month, winning 44.2 percent of the vote against 11.5 percent.
Jeff Millman, campaign director for Ms. Feinstein, expressed confidence Saturday night that a "vast majority of California Democrats" will vote to re-elect her in the fall. In an email, he noted that 217 delegates from the Democratic Party had voted to approve Mr de León, while Ms Feinstein had received more than two million votes in primary California.
