Limerick, Kostal, a manufacturer of automotive electronic systems, has entered into a partnership agreement with the Irish research center SFI Lero for a € 800,000 R & D program to create autonomous robots for badembly lines
program, led by the partner of Lero IT Tralee and the University of Limerick.
Lero's research focuses on stand-alone software systems that will have automatic adaptation capabilities to their environment.
The first part of the research will consist of finding and developing cost-effective mobile autonomous adaptive systems capable of remote, robotic and autonomous operations.
Data badysis, machine learning and scheduling using data from a set of sensors second stage of research.
The Director General of the Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Science Advisor, Mark Ferguson, said: "Programs such as this one will strengthen the knowledge base in Ireland in the important area of flexible autonomous systems."
Kostal has two Irish manufacturing plants at Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick and Mallow, Co Cork, employing a total of 900 people
. This third big Lero announcement is about the search for autonomous systems.
In January, IT researchers Tralee Lero announced, alongside Dairymaster, a 2 million dollar program to develop self-contained systems to lighten workloads on dairy farms.
In February, NUI Galway researchers worked on a driverless car program with Valeo.
