New Zealand Lawn Mower
striker blades Allan Oldfield is considering a possible
World record attempt after helping an Irishman
the biggest day ever a day mowed with the
Allan Oldfield, of Geraldine, was on hand to
each of the 326 sheep shorn by Ireland of 28 years
international Peter Heraty in nine hours to establish a
Irish record at Heraty's house in Owenwee, Co Mayo, the
Friday (NZST).
The local sheep "Mayo blackface" –
ewes, hoggets and two years, mainly his own and with a
average weight of wool of 1.67 kg of wool per sheep in a
pre-record shear of 10 sheep, and the count was 73 more than
his best precedent, in an eight-hour day on the same sheep
last year.
The World Society of Sheep Archives
was not involved in Friday's effort, has the strong wool
standards of 0.9 kg for lambs and 3 kg for adults
sheep.
Oldfield is now studying the possibility of making two
record with Heraty, who shores 72 in the opening race of two
hours followed by successive races of 1h 45min from 65, 62, 64
and 63
Monitored closely by three judges, Heraty's account
was 120 more than the 206 mowed by his Irish shearer
Patrick Moran in the early 1990s, commonly accepted as
Britsh record although last year Welshmen Gareth Evans and
Clive Hamer made a combined total of 397 lambs in nine hours
at Fernhill in Somerset, England, Owen claiming a solo
register with a person account of 202.
The efforts compare
with 353 perendal lambs mowed by New Zealand shearer
Peter Cbaderly at Mt Somers, near Methven, February 13
1976, and the 308 crossed lambs of the Roman border shorn by Bruce
Davidson at Hanmer Springs on December 12, 1973.
It also
compare with the 321 mowed in 7 hours 40min by the legendary
Australian Shearer of the 19th Century Jack Howe at Alice Downs,
Blackall, in western Queensland, October 10, 1892, still
the largest number of slides recorded in Australia and the one that was
not beaten by a mowing machine in Australia until age 57
The only blade discs currently recognized by the
World Sheep Shearing Records Society, premiered for the first time
after a revision of the rules of records in 1983, come from a
eight-hour challenge in South Africa on February 10, 2006,
in which Samuel Juba put a solo merino mark of 245 and with
Bangani Joel a record of two booth of 460.
Heraty and
Oldfield have known each other for about eight years
meeting in New Zealand in 2012, when Heraty first
represented his country at the world championships, and
he came into contact with blade shear supplies
Shear Sharp NZ operation, started by the father of Oldfield,
2017 World Championships third placegetter Phil
Oldfield ..
Heraty had learned to shear with blades by
the time that he was seven or eight years old, from his father
who he says is "a great blade hawker."
He won the All
Ireland Championship Handshearing for the first time in 2012,
at the age of 22, using the Shear Sharp equipment that he bought
New Zealand. He has since won the title the last five times
in a row.
In Ireland for a fortnight helping to prepare,
Oldfield was alongside Heraty throughout Friday, the schedule
sheep to keep the gun hope on the target, and later said:
"It was great." Peter was going hard, but he was tired
at the end. "
But Heraty said this week:" I was very
surprised. I was not more tired the next day than any other
working day but I was very tired the night of
»
About 80% of its shearing is done with a machine
handpiece, but the shearing of the blade seems to have to last
"Some hill farmers are here in their
wayand will not change to shear mchine at this point, "
he said.
Oldfield was quickly in action on his own,
en route to Wales where he won the Royal Welsh Show Open
