Redding, Shasta County, California, threatened as Carr Fire grows

With the fire burning in the area, firefighters did not see the light. had not been able to provide an official record – or even a good estimate – of the number of buildings lost.

By Thursday afternoon, the fire had consumed 28,763 acres. California Governor Jerry Brown said the state of emergency throughout Shasta County due to Carr fire and other fires in the area. Sheriff Tom Bosenko also said the state of local emergency.

The Winds Fire

Mike Hebrard, Fire Chief of Shasta County, said the winds were driving Carr's fire northeastward towards the Shasta Dam .

"The fire is currently heading north towards the Shasta Dam," Hebrard said at a mid-day news conference

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko Down Sacramento River Trail because trail users on the western edge near Keswick were at risk.

Highway 299 west of Buenaventura Boulevard was closed and most of the roads west of this intersection were also closed. On Thursday, firefighters focused on preventing the fire from jumping from Iron Mountain Road in the Keswick area, fighting to prevent it from getting closer to Redding

"We are trying to cut the way to Iron Mountain and keep it north, away from the city, "said Hebrard. "So, if we can get that today, it's a big win."

The weather, however, will continue to be a challenge for firefighters.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning on Thursday when the temperature reached a hot, sticky and smoky 112 degrees. The record should reach 110 Friday and 109 Saturday and Sunday, according to forecasters.
