Redding, Shasta County, California, threatened as Carr Fire grows

"We are trying to cut the way to Iron Mountain and keep it north, away from the city, "said Hebrard. "So, if we can get that today, it's a big win."

The weather, however, will continue to be a challenge for firefighters.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning on Thursday when the temperature reached a hot, sticky and smoky 112 degrees. The record should reach 110 Friday and 109 Saturday and Sunday, according to forecasters.

His street was the subject of an evacuation order, but McCoy said that he was waiting until the last moment to leave.

Meanwhile, the Oak Bottom Marina on Whiskeytown Lake was destroyed.

"The only buildings left standing are the fire station and some toilets," said Hebrard. "The concessions are burned."

About 40 boats from the marina were destroyed, he said. Others were released from their moorings and let themselves drift on the lake.

What caused the fire

Hebrard said that the fire had taken off Wednesday night, spotting up to half a mile ahead of the main hell. The fire was pushed by the wind that was sucked off the coast, he said.

"What we have is a condition here where it is 110 degrees in the valley, it is 60 degrees on the coast.The warm air rises, the air is sucked up and it is the winds that They blow 7 to 8 hours every night, and it's mostly east, north, "said Hebrard.

"So, the fire going north is essentially towards the dam, Shasta Dam," he said.
