All pbadengers aboard the cargo plane survived and were able to leave the plane, according to the Burnet County Sheriff's Office. In addition to several minor injuries, one person was transported by helicopter to a medical center, they said.
The plane, a vintage Douglas C-47 named "Bluebonnet Belle," was en route to an air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, when it crashed into the city of Burnet.
In a video of the incident, the aircraft can be seen diving dangerously to the left just after takeoff. The wing of the plane hits the ground and the plane comes to a standstill while it bursts into flames.
"We are very fortunate that everyone who was aboard the plane got off the plane safely, with some minor injuries," Dowell said.
He added that although some of the pbadengers were Memorial Air Force volunteers, others were guests and family members.
According to Dowell, the C-47 is a military cargo plane that transported members of the service during the Second World War. For Commemorative Air Force volunteers, who dedicate their free time to the maintenance and operation of the aircraft, Dowell said the loss of the plane was tragic. "We spend a lot of time and energy maintaining these planes. "It's part of your family, it's part of your life."
Dowell said that the accident will not prevent his squadron from continuing its mission of educating youth on the history of the Second World War.
"We have an air show scheduled for September here in Burnet," said Dowell. "This air show will continue."
The Federal Aviation Administration handles an investigation into the incident, according to the Sheriff's Office.
