Ali lived near the port city of Chittagong in Bangladesh before immigrating to the United States two decades ago. He worked long hours in convenience stores, shoe stores and dollar stores to shop, says Mustaque.

And Ali was a generous and welcoming member of his Florida community, he said. "He [met] everyone with a smile."

Ali leaves behind a woman, who worked at the convenience store, and four children – a 22-month-old son, a first-year son, a son who will be a sophomore in high school and a girl who will be a junior.

His two oldest children were at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, when an armed man came in and opened fire, killing 17 students and staff members. Ali's son and daughter were not among those who had been shot.

They now have a future without their father and, says Mustaque, "it's hard for them to accept it."
