A pbadenger plane bound for the United States turned back to the Atlantic and headed to Shannon Airport this afternoon . The DL-31 Air Lines flight traveled from London Heathrow to Atlanta in the United States at the time. There were 307 pbadengers and crew on board
The flight had already flown into Irish airspace after leaving Heathrow around 12:10. The Airbus A330-300 aircraft was flying for almost three hours when the crew decided to turn back and head towards Shannon
The fire crews of the Airbus Airport took position on the taxiways adjacent to the runway before the arrival of the aircraft. This was a precautionary measure in case of overheating of the braking system during emergency landing.
After a safe landing at 17:56, the plane was accompanied by emergency vehicles and paramedics HSE and a doctor. The doctors quickly boarded the plane, where they evaluated the pbadenger who was then transferred to the Limerick University Hospital

Despite the best efforts of the cabin crew to revive the man, was declared dead shortly after landing.
Of the 113 unscheduled landings at Shannon Airport last year, 24 were medical emergencies. In three cases, the pbadengers had died before landing or arriving at the hospital.
