The Latest: Heller, Rosen trade barbs in Nevada debate

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Latest on the Senate race between Republican Dean Heller and Democrat Jacky Rosen (all times local):

7:15 p.m.

Nevada Sen. Dean Heller accused Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen of making a visit to see separated families at the U.S.-Mexico border to stage a “photo-op” while she described the incumbent Republican as a “rubber-stamp” for President Donald Trump whose tax plan benefits the wealthy at the expense of the middle-clbad.

Heller and Rosen traded barbs, interrupted and accused each of being untruthful Friday night as they met in their first and only debate in their close U.S. Senate contest in the battleground state.

Heller is considered the most vulnerable Republican senator running for re-election this year because he’s the only one running in a state that Democrat Hillary Clinton won.

Democrats hoping a backlash to President Donald Trump will propel their base to the polls and carry Rosen to victory in battleground Nevada.

Democrat Jacky Rosen is reporting she collected an eye-popping $5 million in campaign donations during the first 17 days of October.

Rosen announced Friday her fundraising totals for the last campaign finance reporting period before the Nov. 6 election.

The freshman congresswoman is in a neck-and-neck race with Republican Sen. Dean Heller and has outraised him every quarter since jumping into the race.

Heller’s campaign did not immediately respond to a message inquiring if his fundraising totals were available early as well.

The reports are not due until Oct. 25.

One of the closest battles Senate races this year involves a neck-and-neck Nevada contest between incumbent Republican Dean Heller and Democrat Jacky Rosen, who will meet in their first and only debate Friday night in Las Vegas.

Heller is considered the most vulnerable Republican senator running for re-election this year because he’s the only one running in a state that Democrat Hillary Clinton won.

Democrats hoping a backlash to President Donald Trump will propel their base to the polls and carry Rosen to victory in battleground Nevada.

She narrowly won her House seat in 2016 after being recruited to run by former Democratic Sen. Harry Reid.

Heller has been in office since 2011. He’s a former critic of the president but has become his ally.
