(CNN) – Melyda Corado, deputy director of Trader Joe who died during a Saturday shootout, was shot by a police officer, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore. "I'm really sorry," Moore said at a press conference Tuesday. "The pain of the Corado family is unimaginable, we share the pain today."
Police said the series of disastrous events began when suspect Gene Evin Atkins shot his 76-year-old grandmother and kidnapped 17-year-olds … As Atkins fled into his grandmother's car, he fired shots through the back window towards the officers' pursuit, police said. The authorities said that the kid he had kidnapped had been shot in the head but that he had survived.
The police did not shoot at the shooter during the pursuit. But after Atkins had crushed the car in front of a Trader Joe and continued shooting at the police, the officers fought back, Moore said.
Atkins escaped into the Joe Trader's, Corado was coming out of the grocery store, police said. It was at this point that Corado was hit by the LAPD shots.
After the murderous shootout, Atkins was hidden in the store and kept these people hostage. A three hour period has elapsed, including hours of negotiations, before Atkins goes to the police.
Atkins now faces 30 charges, including a murder count; six counts of attempted murder (including four counts of attempted murder against a police officer); 13 counts of kidnapping of hostages; Moore and his grandmother and the injured teenager are in critical condition because of their bullet wounds, he says.
Atkins is scheduled to appear on Tuesday. The bond is set at $ 9 million.
