Authorities say that during a confrontation, Emanuel "Manny" Lopes took Chesna's gun and shot the six-year veteran. the department in the head and chest before fleeing on foot. According to the authorities, he fired several more shots while he was being pursued by law enforcement, mortally striking an elderly woman at her home.
The 20-year-old from Weymouth is expected to be arrested this week on murder charges.

How The Shooting Happened
The District Attorney Norfolk said that the Events surrounding the shooting began Sunday at 7:32. when the Weymouth Police Department received a call about an erratic driver near South Shore Hospital. Intervention officers came across a nearby car accident involving a BMW. The driver had been seen leaving the premises on foot.
"[The] The Weymouth Police Department reacted and started looking for this person, this suspect, in the area," Deputy Attorney Gregory Connor said at a press conference Sunday. "One of these officers was the officer Michael Chesna."
Chesna responded to the Burton Terrace area in his police cruiser.
The prosecutor's office said that the 42-year-old officer saw the suspect, later identified as Lopes, "actively vandalizing" a home.
The Boston Globe reports that Lopes allegedly threw stones at a house on the street.
Chesna got out of his car, "fired his gun, and ordered this man to stop," Connor says.
Lopes allegedly attacked Chesna, hitting him on the head with a "big stone". according to the prosecutor's office.
The officer fell to the ground.
"Lopes then recovered the officer Chesna's gun and unloaded it several times in his head and chest," Connor said Sunday.
According to Globe Chesna was shot four times.
Another officer arriving at the scene began to "hit back" at Lopes, who was hit on his knee on one of his legs, officials said.
Lopes reportedly fled on foot, still with Chesna's weapon, and was allegedly pursued by Weymouth police.
"During the chase across the Burton Terrace yards, it is believed that Mr. Lopes unloaded Officer Chesna's gun three more times, hitting a local resident at her home," Connor said. "These injuries were fatal to her."
April Visco, resident of the neighborhood, told Globe that she heard 10 to 20 shots in succession fast around 7:30 in the morning. and ran out, where she heard someone shout, "Get on the floor", three times.
She told the paper that she later saw officers crying and hugging each other.
Lopes was detained shortly after firing the shots and transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, the DA office said. .
Chesna was also taken to the nearby hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
"It's a terrible day for Weymouth and for Mbadachusetts," said Attorney Michael Morrissey in a statement. "Our hearts are very much with the surviving families of these victims."
What We Know About The Suspect
Lopes had been arrested at least twice before by the Weymouth Police on Globe reports . In September 2017, he was arrested for vandalizing a laundry.
A month later, the 20-year-old was charged in October with selling cocaine to minors and resisting arrest, according to The Patriot Ledger . He fled the police and was later arrested with the help of a police officer K-9
"We have already fought with him" a police report on the incident said, according to the Ledger .
CBS Boston reports Lopes was on pre-trial probation in connection with this arrest and had been ordered to undergo random drug testing.
The Norfolk Attorney's Office said Monday morning that Lopes was still hospitalized and that the time and place of his appearance had not yet been determined.

What family and friends say about the victims
On Monday, Chesna reportedly celebrated her sixth anniversary of work for the Weymouth Police Department, Chief Richard Grimes said at Sunday's press conference.
Chesna, who was a veteran of the army, leaves a wife and two children aged 4 and 9 years old.
The chief said that Chesna's mother told him Sunday that his son joined the army with the hope of getting him a job with the Weymouth Police Department.
Grimes stated that the 42-year-old man was badigned to the department's traffic division, working from midnight to 8 am.
"He was just a great family man, he was a great officer," said Grimes. "I saw him in the morning coming from the street, he always had a kind word and a good attitude.He was one of those people who really sought this job, had a chance to get it, and enjoyed it a lot and we enjoyed his service to the Weymouth Police Department. "
