REMNANTS of Hurricane are due to affect Britain this weekend as 75mph winds rage across the Atlantic.
Here’s the latest on the violent storm that forecasters say is “tricky to predict”.
Where is hurricane Oscar?
Hurricane Oscar is currently swirling 660 miles east northeast of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its 5 am advisory today.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 75mph.
However, the NHC says Oscar is expected to remain a “powerful post tropical cyclone” over the north-central and northeastern Atlantic into the weekend.
Large swells generated by Oscar will affect Bermuda today, forecasters say.
Will the storm hit the UK?
Oscar is barrelling across the Atlantic and could smash the UK at the same time as a separate low pressure system, which is expected to bring stormy conditions over the weekend.
We are expecting upwards of 60mm of rain to fall in the Northwest of the UK across the weekend.
The National Hurricane Center in America is warning that Oscar will cause “life-threatening” swells and rip-tides in Bermuda on Wednesday.
Then its effects will be felt in Britain by the end of the week – but the the violent storm is proving dangerously difficult to predict for weather experts.
Katie Greening, meteorologist for the Weather Company, told The Sun Online: “Remnants of Oscar will arrive to the northwest of the UK Friday and pbad in between Scotland and Iceland during the weekend.
“The southwest winds will begin to strengthen through Friday, reaching gale force inland over Ireland, Scotland and Wales during Saturday – gusts even higher with up to 80mph along the west coast of Scotland and Ireland and also along the Irish Sea coasts. Rain arriving over the north and west Friday, quickly followed by a second band of rain Saturday.”
Brian Gaze, director and forecaster for the Weather Outlook, told The Sun Online: “The remnants of Hurricane Oscar look like tracking to the northwest of the UK during Friday and the weekend. It is likely to lead to very windy conditions in northern and western parts of the UK this weekend with gusts of around 60mph possible.”
What has the Met Office said?
Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said there has been a lot of uncertainty regarding Oscar.
He said: “Oscar’s always been a tricky one. At the moment, the most likely track will actually take us a little bit further north than we were thinking before.”
This means that torrential rain and extremely powerful winds are expected to hit the Western Isles and Highlands of Scotland, where gusts of 70mph or stronger are very likely on Friday and into the weekend.
But because of the volatile nature of the storm, Brits are advised to look out for severe weather warnings later in the week as the track of Oscar becomes clearer.
