Ironworker seriously injured after being electrocuted at LIRR station

An ironworker was seriously injured while working on a Long Island railroad project at Mineola Station on Saturday morning, MTA said.

The unidentified worker was part of a construction crew for a pedestrian bridge at the station when a crane struck a high-voltage power line at around 9:30 a.m. The contact “created an arc” towards the bridge injuring the woman, who was a contract employee, according to the MTA.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition, the agency said.

“We have launched a full investigation into this incident and are reviewing all on-site security protocols and procedures. All work on the project has ceased pending investigation, ”said Janno Lieber, president of MTA Construction & Development.

It was the second incident at the station since Monday when a crew became trapped in a signal tower as a nearby building was being demolished and partially collapsed, according to a Newsday report that said no one was hurt.

The construction is part of a project to add an additional trail and make other improvements between Floral Park and Hicksville.
