Steve McQueen’s BBC and Amazon anthology series Small ax has accumulated rewards – with some confusion.
The series that follows West Indian immigrants to London consists of five short films ranging in length from 64 minutes to 128 minutes. Though it was Globe nominated for Best Limited Series, Best Anthology Series, or Made-for-Television, the project also won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Picture Award in December (the winner of this award almost always wins Oscar nominations.). LAFCA’s victory sparked a heated debate on social media over whether McQueen’s latest work was a movie or a TV series.
McQueen, however, is ready to settle the debate: “It was always done for television, for the BBC, because I wanted my mother to see these stories on television,” he says. All I wanted to do was tell as many stories as I could tell this. time and place. “
