Some travelers might be attracted by the lights and beautiful beaches of the modern city of Tel Aviv. But it is in Jerusalem that we can see a collection of significant historical sites for the three major religions present in the city: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. There are also many sites that recall the modern history of Israel and the Jewish struggle for the State of Israel.
Historical Jewish and Muslim sites in Jerusalem include the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and the City of David. Christian tourists also visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and Via Dolorosa.
If you really want to understand the modern history of the country and its experience, you should take a flight to Israel and visit these four monuments:
Munition Hill
Munition Hill is the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the Six-Day War of 1967. Known as the Hebrew "Givat Hatachmoshet", it is located between modern Ramat Eshkol and French Hill.
Thirty-seven Israeli paratroopers were killed on ammunition hill as they attempted to eliminate the entrenched Jordanian legionaries in order to connect the center of Jerusalem with the Israeli enclave of Mount Scopus. Despite the losses, the paratroopers were successful and played a key role in Israel's victory over the reunification of Jerusalem.
British War Cemetery
More than 2,500 British soldiers are buried in the British military cemetery, located on Mount Scopus, between the Regency Hotel and the Hadbadah Medical Center.
The cemetery is a memorial to the British who were killed during a fierce battle with the Ottoman Empire over the city of Jerusalem between 1916 and 1917. It also serves as a memorial to the 3,300 soldiers who died during this campaign but never having received the burial.
Mount Herzl
Mount Herzl is the burial place of Israel and influential figures of the Jewish people – Zionists, politicians and others who have contributed to the development and defense of the State of Israel. It bears the name of Binyamin Zeev (Theodor) Herzl, the visionary of the Jewish state.
Mount Herzl also serves as the official military cemetery of the Israel Defense Forces; dead soldiers in the performance of their duties are buried on Mount Herzl. In the cemetery is the "Memorial of Victims of Terror", the main memorial of all victims of terrorism in Israel from 1851 to the present day. This memorial was created in 1997.
Yad Vashem
Yad Vashem, the world's center of Holocaust remembrance, is right at the top of Mount Herzl. This museum and national Holocaust memorial recounts the brutal and painful history of the Jews during the Second World War. The museum experience includes testimonials, diaries, artifacts and other documents. The history of the Holocaust is told from a Jewish point of view but in a universal language.
