Only 150 to 200 Syrians remain stranded near a key crossing point in Jordan, says Anders Pedersen, one of Jordan's leading humanitarian coordinators in Jordan. Pedersen added that "as far as we understand, they are almost exclusively men".
In recent months, Assad forces have returned to the area surrounding the Syrian capital of Damascus and pushed the rebels north towards Idlib. Assad also looked south, wanting to regain control of the Syrian border with Jordan and Israel, prompting refugees to flee to the Israeli and Jordanian border.
According to the United Nations and human rights organizations, 270,000 people have fled their homes in southern Syria. Some went to existing refugee camps and others to new tent camps that Israel and Jordan helped to establish. Others have moved to the vicinity of Damascus where the fighting is over.
Syrian government forces resumed Friday control of the Naseeb border crossing with Jordan, as well as a long border between the two countries.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in Britain said some 60,000 Syrians have returned home, while thousands have fled to another region , fearing to be detained by government forces
