A Democrat candidate at the California State Assembly said that Israel was committing genocide against the Palestinians and offered its support to the anti-Semitic leader of the Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan.
Maria Estrada, who runs in a suburban district of Los Angeles, finished second in the June 5th primary with 28% to qualify for the November elections. She will be running for the seat against incumbent, Democrat Anthony Rendon, who is also the Speaker of the Assembly.
In an editorial published in the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, Rabbi Abraham Cooper and Harold Brackman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center noted that Estrada had posted last year on Facebook: "Democrats are turning a blind eye to the genocide against the Palestinians and justify it by raising the Holocaust as if what happened 70 years ago justifies it.Whoever believes to be one of the "elect of God" automatically feels superior and justified in all that they do. "Religious fanaticism is used to justify apartheid and crimes against Palestinians and no one should agree with that.
On Tuesday, Estrada posted a screenshot of a definition of genocide from the dictionary term and wrote: "Because some people are unsure of the meaning of the term genocide because the number murdered people are not enough. #Palestine free. "
She added in a commentary: "The argument of the Zionists is that the number of Palestinians has increased, apparently they are not killing enough Palestinians to consider it genocide."
The editorial also says that Estrada tweeted that "I, like listening to Farrakhan's sermons."
Earlier this month, Estrada also used the hashtag #FreePalestine to support five women who left their Birthright Israel tour early to protest the program's bias and try to hide the Israeli occupation of the Palestine.
In a statement on July 6, the Democratic Party of California's Democratic Zionists said in a statement that they were "concerned" by Estrada's "public support for the notorious homophobic and anti-Semitic Louis Farrakhan and his repeated and extreme anti-Semitism under cover of "criticism of Israel. The statement pointed to other anti-Semitic posts on Facebook, including the one on May 10, 2017, in which Estrada posted a drawing replacing the Star of David on the Israeli flag with a swastika – a message for which she apologized for the next day – and a more recent post May 14, in which she criticized California President Eric Bauman for failing to "keep" your party, your religion and your people in check".
"Although we do not support any candidate in this race, we must conclude that Maria Estrada's repeated expressions of anti-Semitism disqualify her from seeking a public office," the group said.
