As Republicans get their date tonight in Alabama, next week they will be the Democrats in the 6th Georgia District, while Lucy McBath and Kevin Abel will face each other to win the GOP Rep. Karen Handel.
The 2017 special election in this district became the center of the political world just a year ago, as did the most expensive home race in American history.
After Democrats lost their chance to overthrow the once-reliable Red Siege, interest in the siege faded. Now, Democratic voters in the Atlanta area district are going to pick their candidate for another shot to take place.
McBath obtained 36% of the May primary vote, more than any of the four Democrats in the running, while Abel was second in the second round with 30.5% of the vote . Both were forced into runoff when no candidate could win the majority of votes.
The campaign is not the first time McBath to the public eye. She became a prominent gun control activist after the death of her son, Jordan Davis. Davis was shot by a man who complained that Davis and his friends are playing loud music from their cars. The killer was sentenced to life for felony charges.
Abel, who was born in South Africa, has his own technology consulting firm with his wife. During his campaign, he also extolled his volunteer experience in the community, including a non-profit that helps resettle refugees.
Abel raised $ 820,500 compared to $ 313,700 to McBath. But McBath had a slim $ 20,000 cash advantage on July 4th.
The winner of the second round will face Handel, who pocketed $ 1 million for his general election as his potential opponents argue.
Handel is no stranger to a tough campaign – Republicans and Democrats spent a record $ 45 million in his 2017 special election against Democrat Jon Ossoff, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Democrats were finally short of nearly 4 percentage points, a disappointing result, but an improvement in a district that has long been in Republican hands. Then Secretary of Health and Social Services, Tom Price, left the headquarters to join the Trump administration, but resigned after scrutinizing his travel expenses.
Since then, Democrats have built on their tendency to outperform with the rich and educated suburban constituency types who call the area neighborhood of Atlanta.
That said, Haendel probably has the advantage both because of the power of the warrant, but also because the Democrats will not devote so much attention or resources to running with a battlefield also important.
