The Japanese blog Mac Otakara reports that Apple's suppliers are probably only capable of making enough chargers for the 2018 iPhones, suggesting that Apple might not sell them as that standalone accessories up to a certain point after launch smartphones, but exactly when remains to be seen.
Earlier this month, photos of a so-called prototype of the new power adapter surfaced, revealing its slightly rounded plastic case slightly larger compared to the adapter current power supply of 5 W. The design of the photos is mainly consistent with CAD drawings and adapter renderings that appeared earlier this year.
The charger connects to iPhones with a USB-C to Lightning cable, also expected to be included in the box. At 18W, it would be able to charge compatible iPhones at least twice as fast as the 5W adapter.
MacRumors tested the iPhone X with various 18W wired chargers last year, for example, and found that the device was reaching a 79% load after one hour. With a 5W charger, the iPhone X has only achieved a load of 39% during this time. We explained our methodology in detail in this article.
