Seems like the Huawei P20 Pro will not be the only phone with a triple camera for much longer. Rumors indicate that the next LG V40 ThinQ will share the same number of cameras. And just like with dual cameras, LG shows that there is more than one way to organize them.
With the Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei upgraded its existing dual camera configuration by adding a third sensor. Most Huawei and Honor devices used a RGB and monochrome matrix, so it made sense to use it as a base for the triple camera and improve it with a telephoto lens. Take advantage of the details captured by the 40 MP RGB lens and the 20 MP monochrome lens sharpness, then simply combine it with the 3x telephoto optical zoom.
For LG, they followed the same tracks. For years, LG's flagship products are known for their use of a primary lens paired with a super wide angle lens, allowing their customers to place more objects in each photo. With the V40 ThinQ, rumors indicate that the super wide angle (or "ultra-white") will return with a goal "super telephoto". It seems that the telephoto lens will offer a 3x optical zoom, offering the same lossless zoom capability as the P20 Pro.
However, LG has not stopped establishing new trends there. Rumors have they will also include 3D face scanning. This feature would be a first for Android devices officially available in the US market, and the way LG accomplishes this is also new. Instead of using an infrared camera to create a map of your face (like the iPhone X, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, and Oppo Find X), they will use two front-facing cameras. Whether it's as accurate as Face ID, or even that we can use at night, no one guesses it, but at least LG is trying something different.
This is not the first time LG joins the party. The LG G6 was the first QuadHD + screen with an 18: 9 aspect ratio, which helped launch the trend of bigger screens last year. With LG joining the party on the triple back cameras, it seems like we can officially say we have a trend. Perhaps most importantly, the LG V40 would be the first American taste of this new configuration, as the Huawei P20 Pro has not been able to travel to the United States coast.
Now that the LG V40 ThinQ brings triple -lens cameras to Americans, other OEMs might be pushed to include a similar configuration. Fortunately, costs are falling for OEMs, and ultimately even midrange devices using the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC 600 or 700 have also. Are you excited about the triple camera trend?
