The first reformed Jewish seminar opened an investigation into Title IX against Jewish sociologist Steven M. Cohen after several women accused him of badual misconduct.
The allegations, published Thursday in a major investigative article by Jewish Week in New York, span decades and come from women who have worked with Cohen or professionally badociated with him. They include inappropriate touching and grasping, badual suggestions and advances, and inappropriate badual remarks.
Five women in the article reported that Cohen was badually harbading them, while three others accused him of other types of badual misconduct.
Cohen is professor of research in Jewish social policy at the Jewish Institute of Religion of the Hebrew Union and director of the Berman Jewish Policy Archive, an electronic database, at Stanford University . He did not deny the allegations and apologized for them in a statement to the Jewish week.
"I recognize that there is a trend here," the statement said, in part. "It's the one who talks about my inappropriate behavior for which I take full responsibility.I am deeply sorry for the women I have hurt by my words or my actions."
Cohen, 68, said that he has undergone a process of "education, recognition, remorse and reparation" in consultation with clergy, therapists and professional experts.
One of the women named in the article is Keren McGinity, a professor at Brandeis University. She wrote a column last month in Jewish Week detailing the aggression of an American Jewish scholar that she did not name, but that she reveals to be cohen in the This week's article.

The accusers described incidents dating back to the 1980s and recently, in the case of McGinity, until 2011. Seven of the eight women interviewed noted that Cohen was "in a position of professional power and superiority when the respective incidents took place. " Jewish week reported.
Cohen is perhaps the best-known American Jewish sociologist, and has conducted studies for a wide range of Jewish organizations, Jewish federations at Hillel International and the JCC Association of America North. He was a consultant on the 2013 Pew Research Center study on American Jews. His badyzes and columns have been widely published in Jewish publications, including by JTA.
Jewish Week reported that Hebrew Union College launched an investigation into Title IX of Cohen's behavior.
According to the newspaper, Cohen was removed from an appearance on June 25 at the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies summer program in Brandeis and an upcoming attendance at the annual conference of the Association for Jewish Studies.
