OAKLAND – For the first time since April 16, 2015, Madison Bumgarner has not completed five innings. He was not injured. It was not really shaken either. He just lost the hitting area during a strange sequence that he could not even really explain after a few hours of thinking.
Bumgarner had five of the last seven batters he faced, including four out of five in the fifth inning, and Bruce Bochy had no choice but to go out and go. to get his ace. The Giants will continue to lose 4-3 in the 11th inning, but they probably were not expecting to be that long because of the way the fifth went.
Bumgarner had walked two batters with the bases loaded in all his starts before this one. He walked back to back with the goals loaded in the fifth. Sam Dyson made it out of the fray, but the damage was significant enough that the Giants could not eliminate it in nine innings, even though they only allowed two blows at this point.
When asked if he feels equally uncomfortable, Bumgarner pauses.
"Yes and no, I suppose," he said. "The first four races I was in. In the fifth, I could not find the zone, I was trying to start strikes, I was not trying to get into corners. It was a weird situation to lose touch for a minute. "
Bumgarner is a maniac for his mechanics, and he said that he had already ruled out any problem there. His velocity was good, so there was little reason to have greater concern. It was just a strange stretch.
"It's different from Bum," Bochy said. "But it happens from time to time."
A night like that had never happened to Bumgarner before. He walked six career hitters. Bumgarner was not particularly sharp since the start, missing his points several times, even on land called "shots". "I just lost the sensation there in the fifth," said Bumgarner. "I just could not launch attacks, that's it."
It meant that he could not stay as long as he normally does. Bumgarner had completed five innings in a franchise record of 89 consecutive starts. It was the longest active series in the major leagues. He reacted harshly a few weeks ago when a reporter mentioned records. This time, he admitted that this particular race meant something, if only for what it represents.
"The idea is to go deep into the games," he said.
For once, Bumgarner was not able to do that.
