Sony, one of the largest providers of image sensors for smartphones, has just announced the upcoming availability of its new IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for embedded cameras. According to Sony, this is the smallest pixel size of 0.8 μm, which is why it is possible to package 48 effective megapixels on a 1/2 type unit
in terms of performance, Sony's IMX586 image sensor competes with high-performance SLR cameras and allows users to capture high-resolution, state-of-the-art images with a smartphone. Sony has included its exposure control technology and signal processing functionality directly into the image sensor, which allows much better real-time output than conventional devices.
IMX586 also uses Quad Bayer color filter matrix 2×2 pixels are the same color allowing higher sensitivity. In addition to this, during the low-light capture, the signal from the four adjacent pixels is added, further increasing the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 12 megapixels, resulting in clear, low-noise images.
The new CMOS image The sensor will begin to be delivered in September, but we do not know when the first smartphones will be equipped with the Sony IMX586 sensor.
