For the first time since coach Andy Reid arrived in Kansas City in 2013, the Chiefs enter the training camp with a new starting quarterback.
Second year pro Patrick Mahomes, however, had a training camp last year while he was learning behind Alex Smith, and Reid pointed out Sunday that the experience had helped Mahomes make the transition during the training program.
"He got absorbed, that's what he did and it happened during [organzied team activities]," Reid told reporters, via the Chiefs' official website. "He was able to function at a high level and do what he needs." Will there be growing pains and everything that happens? "Of course, it's a young man who is learning the game. We're here to teach him what we'll do and he's here to learn, and then go play and have fun at do it. "
With Mahomes, the Chiefs have a powerful and mobile quarterback capable of throwing from different angles.
While Reid admits that his young flagman may have an occasional mistake during the camp, the Chiefs do not plan to restrain the flagman, especially when the pads go on and the attack goes through. 39, team of 11 against 11. exercises as part of the educational process of Mahomes.
"Let's work through, let's not be hesitant," Reid said of his message to Mahomes. "If there is an interception here or there, let's learn, challenge the attack, not only the player, but also the challenge of the attack and see what you can do. If you see it, let's shoot it and leave.
Meanwhile, Mahomes had the opportunity to win a gaming experience in 2017, starting the season finale against the Denver Broncos. He demonstrated his athletic talent in a 27-24 win, completing 22 of 35 pbades for 284 yards without touchdown or interception.
The Chiefs have sufficiently believed in Mahomes to trade Smith for Washington during the offseason, and the weeks ahead before the regular season give the young striker a chance to master the attack and reward the confidence of the team in him.
For his part, Mahomes fully embraces the opportunity to enter the training camp as a starter.
"It's exciting to know that you're going to get the majority of reps, you're really going to work on your game," Mahomes told reporters, via the Chiefs' official website. "It's something you dream about when you were little, so for me it's the beginning of the new season, you really come here to work with the guys and build that relationship and that connection."
Mahomes will not go it alone, of course, since he is taking over an attack with running back Kareem Hunt, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce.
The Chiefs also added receiver Sammy Watkins during the free phase, which gave the team a new weapon to mark the beginning of the Mahomates era.
