The Department of Defense's demining unit swept through about 350 landmines in one go in the Golan Heights on Tuesday in a major blast of about 15 seconds.

The Israeli army laid most of the mines in Israel after the Six-Day War of 1967, although some were laid by Syrian and Jordanian forces who were taken to Israeli territory. According to estimates, there are more than one million landmines in the Golan Heights and along the southern border of Israel with Jordan.

Seven years ago, the Knesset approved a law requiring demining of minefields that are not essential to the country's security. After its adoption in October 2017, a boy who was hiking on the Golan Heights with his family lost a leg when he stepped on a mine.
