While Huawei was busy unveiling the new Mate 20 series earlier this week, Richard Yu, the company’s consumer products CEO, was quietly confirming that Huawei’s rumored foldable phone will be coming next year. The executive also mentioned that the device will support the next-generation 5G wireless service. Yu’s comments dovetail perfectly with those of the firm’s rotating chairman, Ken Hu, who said last month at the World Economic Forum that Huawei’s first 5G phone would be a foldable model. He said that this device is expected to arrive by next June.
In September, Yu told German newspaper Die Welt that foldable handsets could replace computers. That’s because they can be stored in users’ pockets, and when taken out to be used, the screen can expand to the size of a tablet’s display.
If everything goes as expected, Samsung will be first out of the gate with its foldable phone, which for now is dubbed the Galaxy F. Some of the specs belonging to the eagerly-awaited handset are expected to be released at the Samsung Developer Conference on November 7th. In January, the phone is rumored to be unveiled at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
When folded, the Galaxy F is believed to carry a 4.6-inch display that grows to 7.3-inches when fully expanded. In August, the chief of Samsung’s mobile division, DJ Koh, said that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will not be the first 5G phone offered by the company, leading many to speculate that the Galaxy F will launch with support for the zippy new wireless service.
