The day started off bad for the Blackhawks and only got worse.
Patrick Kane missed his first regular-season game in three and a half seasons because of an illness and the Hawks blew a pair of leads to begin a three-game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Canucks at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
Brendan Gaunce scored the game-winner with 10 minutes, 37 seconds left in the third period and Antoine Roussel added an insurance goal with 3:27 left to seal the win.
On Gaunce’s goal, Jonathan Toews tried to pbad to John Hayden but didn’t realize Hayden was without a stick. Gaunce picked up the puck in the slot and quickly fired it over Corey Crawford’s left shoulder for the game-winner.
The Hawks dropped to 6-4-3 and are winless in their last three games, their worst stretch of the season.
Brandon Saad put the Hawks up 1-0 with 13:04 left in the first. Chris Kunitz hit him with a pbad near the blue line and Saad blew past defenseman Erik Gudbranson before scoring his third of the season on a shot that barely trickled in past Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom.
Toews scored his seventh of the season early in the second to put the Hawks ahead 2-1. Jake Virtanen had a pair of goals for the Canucks.
