Democrat David Shapiro quickly took the lead over a Republican posted on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
Shapiro was behind Vern Buchanan, who held six terms, and had rarely faced serious challenges in the past.
Shapiro and Lauren Baer, north of Palm Beach, had only one outside chance to win and both races were described as meager Republicans by most badysts.
But early results could give the GOP's nightmares that the much-vaunted #BlueWave could be as powerful as he feared.
Shapiro was seen as a long shot to defeat Buchanan, who has rarely had a competitive run during his 12 years in power. The 16th district of Buchanan also covers a much more friendly part of the Gulf Coast, although it includes the liberal beach communities and the cities of Sarasota and Bradenton.
