The Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt on Thursday sent a delegation of high-level Coptic clerics to Jerusalem to investigate the ongoing conflict over a Coptic monastery.

According to a statement by the church, Coptic Pope Tawadros II sent the delegation to meet Archbishop Antonios, Metropolitan Coptic Archbishop of Jerusalem, "to discuss the latest developments concerning the Deir al-Sultan Monastery".

Deir al-Sultan is a former Coptic monastery located on the roof of the Holy Sepulcher Church in Jerusalem.

At the end of last month, the Israeli police in Jerusalem forcibly dispersed a demonstration organized by Coptic clergy to protest the Israeli authorities' refusal to allow them to renovate the monastery.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that its newly appointed ambbadador to Israel, Khaled Azmi, had raised the issue with Israeli officials.

Muslim and Christian clergy in Jerusalem said Israeli authorities imposed strict restrictions on the repair and / or renovation of Muslim and Christian holy places.
