The Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef has spoken out against marriage proposals, including giving a ring in the presence of people.
According to Rabbi Yosef, such a situation is problematic from a halachic point of view, in particular because it resembles a wedding ceremony in which a bell is given in the presence of witnesses, although it is not perceived as a ceremony by the participants.
In a letter he sent to city rabbis who consulted him about the spread of the phenomenon among the students of the yeshiva, Rabbi Yosef replied that the practice was to be challenged. His comments were published Tuesday morning, the Kikar Hashabat.
