Cobra Kai Trailer

The good news: starting next year, YouTube will pull all of its original content behind the premium paywall, allowing users to enjoy a version of TV programs such as Cobra Kai. The bad news: This decision also means that YouTube will not invest in so much scripted programming, but will focus on reality-based projects featuring celebrities and YouTube stars.

In an official statement (via Variety), YouTube summarized all this into a vague language that includes phrases such as "global fanbase", "YouTube generation", etc .:

"As for 2019, we will continue to invest in scripted programming and will change so that our YouTube Originals advertising is supported to meet the growing demand for a more global fan base." This next phase of our original strategy will expand the audience of our original YouTube creators and provide advertisers with incredible content that will reach the YouTube generation. "

If you read between the lines, you'll get a pretty clear picture of what happened here: YouTube Premium does not light up the world, so everyone involved rethinks what kind of content they want to create and how they wish it. serve it to their audience of billions. After all, Cobra Kai was very well received when he arrived earlier this year, but other originals of YouTube have landed with a thud. Does anyone talk about their new science fiction series, Origin? Nah.

Of course, this does not mean that scripted TV is dead on YouTube. Earlier this year, they renewed Impulse, Step Up: high water, Field of mind, Quartet, Ryan Hansen solves crimes on television, Kevin Hart: What's right? and Cobra Kai. And with the incredible Corsica debuting on YouTube this week, YouTube has already invested in the broadcast of one of the best movies of 2018. The original YouTube is not dead, it is changing. It comes back to the basics, even.

The Variety report says that YouTube's future programming will focus more on YouTube's local stars, creating programming around the creators who have used the YouTube platform to create original content and create their own audience. And that may be the right choice – in a streaming market as dense as the one occupied by powers such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, YouTube does not have what it has. They have unscrupulous and weird creators that cater to all kinds of niche tastes that you will not find anywhere else. Cobra Kai, although a well-received program, could nowhere. Some of YouTube's most eclectic content feels unique and unique to their home.

So, again, we are dealing with a "good, bad" situation. It's a shame that YouTube Premium does not display numbers to support a huge library of scripted content, but at least everyone will be able to see original shows, even with certain ads. It's a disappointment that they are cutting back on their screenplay work, but I have enough fantastic creators on YouTube to know that investing in these smaller, more frightening personalities will pay dividends if they're properly nurtured (I'm doing my job better to pretend that "Stars" like Logan Paul do not exist). YouTube is not going anywhere and it will be fascinating to see how they coexist in an increasingly crowded market, where everyone has a streaming service to sell us.

Cool messages from anywhere on the web:
