There are many reasons why a person may feel suicidal or die by suicide. For some, suicide may seem to be the only way to relieve overwhelming emotional pain. It's not so much about dying as finding peace. To illustrate this, Bruce Springsteen used two metaphors to feel trapped by intense emotions.
"One time, I found myself in some kind of box where I could not get out and where the feelings were so uncomfortable," Springsteen told Esquire after being questioned about whether he had ever considered suicide .
Springsteen, 69, said he did not know if he could live with what he was feeling, recounting his second "breakdown" in his early sixties. Springsteen told Esquire that these thoughts were expressed during his "agitated depression," characterized by agitation and sometimes referred to as "mixed mania." Although mixed mania occurs in people with bipolar disorder, it can occur in people with major depressive disorder.
"It was the" agitated depression "I'm talking about in the book [‘Born to Run’], where feelings became so uncomfortable that I just could not find a twelve-by-twelve talk topic, where I could feel a sense of peace, "Springsteen said.
Feeling trapped in a box or not finding the floor to stand on can be told if you have already felt overwhelmed with emotion or depression. Even when you are trying to find something that helps you feel more stable, your search may not always be successful, leaving you more desperate. Springsteen said that he thought he felt "just enough desperation for myself: the pain gets too strong, the confusion becomes too big, and that's it for you."
"I had no inner peace," Springsteen told the magazine. "And I said," Well, I really do not know. I do not know how long I could. . . It was a manic state, and it was so deeply emotional, spiritually and physically uncomfortable that the only thing I ever said was, "Gee, I do not know, man."
Like Springsteen, Lady Gaga also described suicidal ideation in order to make it feel like living with it. Gaga called suicidal thoughts a "spell". She explained, "We need empathy, be kind and help each other break the spell, live and prosper.
If you find yourself stuck in a box or under a spell, know that others feel so isolated and overwhelmed by emotions. The fact is, we are not alone, no matter how much our mind tells us we are. Finding ways to deal with overwhelming emotions or a depression that simply does not want to dissipate is incredibly difficult, but when something clicks – and it does – you'll get the relief and peace you need. You just have to stay for that.
