Wales patients wait the longest of 10 regions to begin treatment for intestinal cancer

Some British patients with bowel cancer wait up to a year to start treatment, new research1 found.

An international study published in BMJ Open found that in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, 10% of patients waited a year before they experienced a symptom before starting treatment. It covered the diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer in 10 jurisdictions in six countries.

In Wales, men and women took the longest to contact their doctor once they found a health problem or symptom (mean median of 49 days).
