The Birks Group, one of the oldest luxury jewelry retailers in Canada, is now accepting bitcoin payments in some stores.
The company announced Tuesday that it has partnered with BitPay, the US-based bitcoin-based payment processor, to enable customers to make "faster, easier, and safer" purchases.
Currently, bitcoin payments are activated in eight of the group's stores, located in Vancouver West Hastings, Brinkhaus Calgary, Fairview Mall, Bloor, Yorkdale, Montreal and Calgary, out of the 26 in the group.
Some of the brands available for purchase via Bitcoin are Rolex, Bulgari, Cartier and Breitling, the firm said. Its two recently opened stores in Vancouver, Graff and Patek Philippe, are also expected to accept cryptocurrency in the near future.
"As a global growth brand, we believe that BitPay will benefit our customers if we seek to align with these innovative, state-of-the-art capabilities," said Birks Group President and Chief Executive Officer John Christophe Bédos.
The company added that this was BitPay's "first major implementation" of its point-of-sale solution in Canada.
"The acceptance of bitcoin helps the Birks Group to satisfy its high-end international customers and acquire new customers while offering an innovative and secure payment option," said Sonny Singh, Business Manager at BitPay.
