A senior El Al Airlines official was arrested Monday with three other suspects suspected of smuggling drugs into Israel, Israeli police said on Monday.

The manager, Rami Yogev, was head of the development and resource department at El Al and worked for the company for two decades. He is suspected of carrying large quantities of cocaine into Israel aboard El Al aircraft.

Yogev had a very high security rating and, in the past, worked directly with the country's leading law enforcement and security agencies, including the Shin Bet. Yogev was first taken by customs agents at Ben Gurion airport with drugs in his possession and was interrogated by the police. Subsequently, he was suspected of leading a smuggling operation while taking advantage of his position and the company's aircraft.

His arrest took place as a result of an undercover investigation conducted by the police unit responsible for international crime investigations. Police located and raided a store on Levinsky Street in Tel Aviv, which was used as a drug depot and arrested him.

A representative of the Israeli police said the suspicions against Yogev were more serious than those against the other suspects.
El Al declined to comment on this.
