Two major Jewish groups have issued statements criticizing the sponsors of Roger Waters' tour of Mexico and South America.
On Tuesday, two leaders of the Conference of Presidents of the major American Jewish organizations said they had urged their sponsors to withdraw their support for the Us + Them tour of Pink Floyd's former singer.
"We have written to the sponsors about Roger Waters '(…) concerts, and we urged them to withdraw their sponsorship because of Mr. Waters' hostile, fanatical and anti-Semitic comments on many occasions," said Arthur Stark. President of the Conference of Presidents, and Malcolm Hoenlein, President and Chief Executive Officer. "He continues to espouse these offensive views – and should not be able to broadcast his anti-Israel and anti-Jewish messages."
In addition, the two men stated that because of Waters' extreme views and methods, "we call the elected officials of all countries where Waters will appear to clearly demonstrate his rejection of his offensive and instigating remarks."
Wednesday night, Waters will appear in Mexico City, his first of seven concerts in Mexico.
The statement from the Conference of Presidents comes just a day after the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged Citibank to stop subscribing to the tour of the waters.
"The Simon Wiesenthal Center is asking Citibank to withdraw its sponsorship of Roger Waters' anti-Semitic concert tour in Mexico," the organization said on Monday. "The Wiesenthal Center had contacted Citibanamex to ask it to cancel its financial support for Waters, a notorious antisemite.Not having received any response from Citibanamex, the center is demanding action from the world headquarters."
