In reworking, the army forms a new brigade Faran to defend the Israeli-Egyptian border

The Israeli Defense Forces announced Wednesday the reorganization of the units responsible for keeping the southern border with Egypt, to close the current brigade and replace it with a new one with additional responsibilities.

The Sagi Regional Brigade will be closed and in its place the Faran Brigade will defend the Egyptian border from the community of Nitzana to the north of the city of Eilat.

However, unlike the Sagi Brigade, which was solely responsible for monitoring the border area, the new Faran Brigade will also be responsible for training and managing the forces serving in the area.

In general, in the IDF, regional brigades are static units located in one part of the country, which direct and control the combat brigades that temporarily provide the manpower needed to defend these areas. For example, the Givati Brigade can serve in the Golan Brigade along the Syrian border for four months before being replaced by another combat brigade.

The new Faran Brigade will effectively combine these two roles: train and prepare the troops for their service, and command them once deployed along the border.

This decision is part of an overall effort by the Israel Defense Forces to rationalize its forces, particularly those of its Border Defense Force, formed last year, which includes the four mixed light infantry battalions, as well as combat intelligence units and trackers.

The soldiers who will be part of the Faran Brigade will come from the Bardelas and Caracal mixed shingles of the Border Defense Force, the army said.

Colonel Eli Yitzhak Ben-Bashat, commander of the new Faran Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces, who will defend the Israeli-Egyptian border, will meet with officers in November 2018. (Israel Defense Forces)

Colonel Eli Yitzhak Ben-Bashat was chosen to command the new brigade.

"I think and I am sure that with the troops at our disposal, with the experience and motivation, we will continue to defend the borders of the state of Israel in the best possible way "said Ben-Bashat in a statement.

The newly formed brigade has already organized a small exercise to see how the different units that make up the brigade work together, said the army.

The brigade's soldiers will wear the spotted, yellow, green and brown berets of the Border Defense Force, red boots and a new label on their shoulder.

Faran's name was chosen because it was used in the Bible to designate a desert in the Sinai Peninsula near the border with Israel's Land along the new brigade.
