Alfonso Cuaron Celebrates its 57th birthday on November 28, 2018. The Oscar-winning director could end up in the trophy race this year with his latest work, "Roma". But how does he rank with the rest of his filmography? In honor of his birthday, let 's return to the eight films of Cuaron, ranked from worst to best.
Born in Mexico City in 1961, Cuaron made his debut as a director while he was only 30 years old with the prank in Spanish "Solo con Tu Pareja" (1991). He was soon appointed by Hollywood to direct the children's movie "A Little Princess" (1995) and the film Charles Dickens adaptation "Great Expectations" (1998).
It is with "Y Tu Mama Tambien" (2001), a bady comedy filmed in Mexico, that Cuaron won his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (alongside his brother, Carlos). He soon returned to America to direct the third installment of the "Harry Potter" franchise, "The prisoner of Azkaban" (2004).
Oscar-winning voters once again took note of the filmmaker with the futuristic drama "Children of Men" (2006), for which he received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing. Seven years later, he won the trophy jackpot with another sci-fi epic, "Gravity" (2013), becoming the first Hispanic to win the title of Best Director. Cuaron won an additional prize in the Best Editing category, which was also awarded for his cinematography, score, editing, mixing and visual effects.
With "Roma", Cuaron returns to his hometown of Mexico City to tell the story of a poor maid (newcomer). Yalitza Aparicio) working for a middle-clbad family in the early 1970s, drawing largely on his own memories of his youth. The film, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, is currently in a limited version and will be released on Netflix on December 14th.
