A potentially disastrous collision between two planes was narrowly avoided Tuesday night at Israel's largest international airport, the Israeli authorities said Wednesday.
Around 7:00 pm On Tuesday evening, at Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport, an Airbus A320 pbadenger aircraft operated by the company "easyJet" was heading to runway 26 before take-off.
The easyJet aircraft, however, did not receive clearance from the control tower to enter the runway, authorities said.
The tower operators quickly alerted the easyJet aircraft that it was approaching runway 12, which intersects runway 26, and ordered the flight crew easyJet to stop the aircraft and get off the runway. Operators of the control tower reported that another aircraft was about to land on runway 12.
The easyJet aircraft complied with the orders of the control tower and stopped just before the plane landed, a Bombardier Challenger 350 aircraft. Authorities say the collision was averted in seconds.
"The order of the control tower that the [easyJet] aircraft immediately stopped prevented security incident, "said the Israeli Airports Authority in a statement Wednesday.
"The professional behavior and vigilance of flight attendants [in the control tower] who spotted what was happening prevented the disaster. "
