Researchers designed RSTAR to operate in a simple and reliable way, to change shape and overcome common obstacles without any external mechanics.
Its relatively low speed and power consumption make the robot ideal for a wide range of applications that may require a longer working time.
The robot uses its round wheels to travel more than three feet per second on flat, hard surfaces and switches to spoked wheels to cross extremely soft or gritty surfaces, such as thick mud or sand, without getting caught .
It also climbs vertically and crawls horizontally by pressing its wheels against the walls without touching the ground.
Work on a larger version of the STAR robot that will climb over bigger obstacles, including stairs, and carry more than four pounds of sensors and supplies.
A smaller STAR or RSTAR will graft on the larger robot zones and sneak between cracks and narrow pbadages.
