The romantic comedy centers on the unlikely relationship between a wealthy, successful model and a guy who works at his family’s bakery.
ABC is going into rom-com territory with an adaptation of Israeli series The Baker and the Beauty.
The network has given a put-pilot commitment to the project from Universal TV in badociation with Keshet Studios, which produced the original series. Dean Georgaris (The Meg) will write the script and executive produce with director David Frankel (Manifest, The Devil Wears Prada).
The project reunites Universal, Keshet — which has a first-look deal with the studio — and Georgaris, who teamed on The Brave for NBC in 2017-18.
Set in Miami, the Notting Hill-esque Baker and the Beauty follows the unlikely relationship between “the most famous woman in the country” and a guy who works in his family’s bakery. It centers on Noa, a successful model, daughter of a real-estate magnate and, until recently, half of a Hollywood power couple; and Daniel, the son of Cuban immigrants who still lives with his parents.
A chance meeting at a restaurant — where Daniel may or may not propose to his girlfriend of eight years and Noa is avoiding public speculation about her break-up — leads to sparks and an unlikely romance.
Assi Azar created and Oded Ruskin directed the original series, which was a hit in Israel (its third season debuts in November) and streams on Amazon worldwide. Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan will executive produce the adaptation along with Georgaris and Frankel.
Georgaris, Frankel and Keshet are all repped by WME.
