Achdut recalls 6 tahini brands after the discovery of salmonella

Salmonella found in an imported sample of tahini and linked to a small outbreak of American salmonella prompted Israeli company Achdut to initiate a mbadive international recall.

All tahini products – Tahini, Tahini Whole, Organic Tahini, Seasoned Tahini – Expired by April 7, 2020 to May 21, 2020 and sold under the Achdut, Baron, S & F, Pepperwood, Soom and Achva brands are recalled. Lot numbers are 18-097 to 18-141.

According to Achdut and the FDA, an imported sample of tahini tested to have the same genetic fingerprint of salmonella as salmonella that the CDC found infected to five people. A recall notice written by the Achdut Company and the FDA indicated that it was Achdut Tahini, while the FDA investigation revealed that it was Baron's Tahini.

Regardless of the brand, "out of the five US cases surveyed, the five said they consumed hummus made with tahini," the FDA said. "Three people reported eating tahini or hummus made at a restaurant in the United States, while the other two people reported using tahini or hummus made with tahini at international travel. "

The CDC estimates that Salmonella strikes 1.2 million US citizens every year, causing a few days of fever, diarrhea, and stomach aches. About 23,000 of them end up in the hospital as a result of bloody diarrhea. Approximately 450 Americans die each year from salmonella, usually elderly people or children under five.
