Syrian President Bashar Assad and an envoy of Russia, allied with Russia, discussed on Sunday the "removal of obstacles" to the formation of a constitutional committee requested by the international powers to put an end to the war of seven years, announced the presidency.
The opposition lobbied for an entirely new constitution, but the regime said it would only discuss the change in the current one.
Last week, Damascus rejected a list of the United States presented by the outgoing envoy of the world organization in Syria, Staffan de Mistura.
He also attracted international powers, with the support of Russia and Iran to the Syrian government, a US-led coalition and sending troops through Turkey.
Russia has maintained the balance of forces in Syria, both on the battlefield and in United States-led peace talks, over the last two years.
